Alexandre FURNELLE

Double bass, composer

Alexandre Furnelle was born in the Congo where he lived until age 6.  He has been passionate about music since a very young age.

As a self-taught musician, he gained musical knowledge at an academic level (double bass, harmony, jazz double bass, vocals, rhythm, choir conducting, viola da gamba, etc …).

His starting point was an interest for sound as a raw matter, as well as for primitive musical instruments.

Since 1979 he has collaborated with musicians from almost every musical genre, such as the gypsy guitarist Fapi Lafertin, jazzmen Peter Hertmans, Erwin Vann, Daniel Stokart, Jan de Haas, Barbara Wiernik, Ben Sluijs, Kristina Fuchs, Alexandre Cavaliere, Marie-Sophie Talbot (between jazz and chanson) and a number of musicians of non-European cultural descent (mostly oriental).

Alexandre is a member of several music groups, among which O’Tchalaï (music from Eastern Europe), and as an instrumentalist and composer, he participates in several shows (theater and storytelling) such as recently in “Me parlez pas d’amour”.

His latest projects are AF New5 (quintet) and Kaléidoscopes (sax +strings).

Discography

« Kaléïdoscopes » (RB06)

The music of Kaléïdoscopes is mainly the result of compositions and ‘proposals’ by Alexandre and Daniel. Their spheres of influence are not only to be found in contemporary jazz and ‘classical’ music, but also in minimalistic music and other contemporary musical approaches.

A dreamy atmosphere is what you can expect.
The written pieces are alternated with open spaces of improvisation thanks to which the musicians have the opportunity to express themselves freely.

The boarder between writing and improvisation cannot always be clearly perceived.

Kaléïdoscopes is a group that joyfully connects different generations, genres and musical worlds… all in service of music.
